How to Raise Money by Hosting a Trivia Night
It is no small feat to put on a trivia (or quiz) night. There are things to consider like; the venue, the questions, food and drink, prizes, promotion, and overall safety and security. But let’s not worry about those right now. Let’s discuss what is probably your entire drive for running a quiz night in the first place… raising money.
Who are you and who is your audience?
Are you the manager of a pub trying to sell more pints on an otherwise dead Tuesday night? Are you trying to finance hockey uniforms for your child’s team? Are you trying to raise money for a cause you feel strongly about? Knowing what you are trying to achieve with a trivia night will inform who you are likely to get in attendance.
Invested - These are people with a stake in the outcome of your quiz night, in the organisation it’s associated with, or with you personally. They want to see the night go well or at lease to show others that it is something they care about. They are the regulars of your bar, the members of your club, or your friends and family. This is why every large quiz night has at least one organiser's mum in attendance.
Altruistic - These are people with a stake in the outcome of your quiz night. If your quiz is trying to raise money for a cause, they care deeply about the cause. It is unlikely someone would attend your quiz ONLY for altruistic reasons as there are probably other ways to support your cause, but this is a strong, overlapping motivator for many.
Tight-arses - You mightn’t think going to an event that is trying to raise money is an effective means of achieving personal gain but trivia nights often purvey cheap drinks, chances to win or bid on decent prizes, and wares that are under-priced.
Quiz lovers - Lastly, this is just your general population of people who enjoy learning, pondering ideas, showing off that they’re right, validating their bachelors degrees, or academic.
…there may be significant overlap in the above categories.
Raise money by not spending money
This might be savings 101 but a penny saved is a penny earned. Trivia nights can be a huge logistical affair and when your $10,000 raised is compared to the $7,000 you spent on catering; your efforts can be quickly undercut.
